Male & Female
Design
The field-service side hat is the current Royal Green Jackets pattern.
Finish
The side hat carries a silver cap badge.
Colour
The side hat has black buttons.
Wear
The side hat is an alternative to No. 1 Dress headwear for officers in mess dress.
The side cap may be worn by officers in No. 2 Dress, but not with leather, at the Commanding Officer’s discretion.
Where locally authorised and at Commanding Officer discretion, the general rule permits side caps with No. 2 Dress when leather equipment is not worn, and with No. 10, No. 13 and No. 14 Dress; more-specific local rules control the actual product scope.
Variant
The Army-wide side-cap rule identifies the Austrian pattern, with buttoned flaps and a folding peak, as normal; authorised Torin patterns omit the buttons and peak, and the regiment or Corps specification determines which pattern applies.
Provision
Side caps are an optional item for officers in most regiments and Corps and for soldiers only in some units.
