The Bespoke Process

The process

Crafting your garment

Every commission is overseen by Geoffrey Golding, from the initial consultation through to the final inspection of the finished garment.

01

Consultation

Every commission begins with a conversation with Geoffrey Golding. Whether you require military, ceremonial, mess dress or civilian tailoring, requirements are discussed in detail, including garment specification, intended use, rank distinctions, accoutrements and any relevant regulations.

02

Specification & Planning

Following consultation, the garment specification, cloth, trimmings, insignia and fitting requirements are confirmed. Lead times and delivery arrangements are discussed before work begins, ensuring every aspect of the commission is clearly understood.

03

Measurements & Fitting

All measurements are taken personally by Geoffrey at the St Albans workroom. For clients unable to attend in person, a remote measurement service is available, with measurements reviewed and confirmed before the commission proceeds.

04

Pattern & Preparation

Using the measurements and agreed specification, patterns are prepared and materials selected. Every commission is carefully planned to ensure the finished garment reflects both the required specification and the individual wearer.

05

Tailoring

Work begins on the garment, combining traditional tailoring methods with meticulous attention to structure, fit and finish. Throughout the process, each commission is monitored to ensure the highest standards of craftsmanship are maintained.

06

Fittings & Refinement

The garment is assessed through fitting appointments and refined where necessary. Most commissions require two fittings, although the number may vary depending on the garment, specification and fit requirements. Adjustments are made throughout the process to achieve the required appearance, comfort and balance, ensuring the finished garment meets both the specification and the wearer's expectations.

07

Final Inspection & Delivery

Before collection or delivery, every completed garment undergoes a final inspection by Geoffrey to ensure it meets the standards expected of a Goldings commission. Once approved, arrangements are confirmed and the garment is presented ready for wear.
